A 21-year-old police officer, Constable Apimeleki Vakarusabola Colamoto, is facing serious allegations following an incident on November 17, where he reportedly assaulted a man named Vilikesa Bari. The Nausori Magistrate’s Court has transferred the case to the High Court in Suva, where Colamoto is charged with causing grievous harm.
During the hearing, Prosecutor Shelveen Sharma formally requested the transfer to the High Court, which was granted by Magistrate Samanunu Vaniqi. Colamoto has been granted bail with specific conditions: he must pay a cash bond of $100, provide two sureties, surrender all travel documents, and adhere to a stop departure order. Moreover, he must not commit any further offenses while on bail and should refrain from interfering with witnesses.
His next court appearance is scheduled for January 20, 2025, when he will receive case disclosures and enter a plea. He has also been allowed time to consult with a Legal Aid lawyer to prepare for the forthcoming proceedings.
This case underscores the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the law regardless of one’s position, indicating a willingness to ensure that all individuals, including those in law enforcement, are held accountable for their actions. As the legal process unfolds, it will be important for the community to remain informed and engaged, reinforcing the principle of justice in society.
