PNG Rugby Union Suspended: What Went Wrong?

The Oceania Rugby Executive Board has announced the suspension of the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Rugby Union’s membership due to multiple compliance violations. This move follows an independent investigation and extensive deliberations regarding the governing body’s failure to meet Oceania Rugby’s established standards.

Effective immediately, the suspension is attributed to ongoing issues, including PNG Rugby’s absence from significant events like the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championships held in Brisbane and the Olympic Sevens qualification repechage tournament. Additionally, complaints from Provincial Unions concerning the board’s and management’s conduct have played a critical role in this decision.

As a result of the suspension, PNG Rugby will forfeit its voting rights in the union and will be excluded from Oceania Rugby’s competitions and development programs. The funding for the union has also been put on hold.

Frank Puletua, the General Manager of Oceania Rugby, emphasized the seriousness of the situation: “The decision to suspend the membership of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Union was not taken lightly. However, due to non-compliance with the Notice of Orders issued in July, we felt compelled to take this action, prioritizing the interests of all stakeholders associated with PNG Rugby.”

He expressed optimism about PNG Rugby’s future potential, stating, “I am confident that PNG will soon showcase its true capabilities on both the national and international rugby stages. The Executive Board is dedicated to assisting PNG Rugby in regaining its status as a full member of Oceania Rugby.”
