The newly inaugurated Savusavu Mabe Pearl Oyster and Handicraft showroom in Cakaudrove is poised to significantly benefit local communities engaged in the farming of Mabe pearls. The opening ceremony was led by Alitia Bainivalu, the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, who emphasized the importance of the showroom in enhancing the livelihoods of coastal communities involved in this industry.

Minister Bainivalu highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), the University of Sunshine Coast, the Ministry of Fisheries, and local Mabe pearl farmers from Vanua Levu. She reflected on the long-standing partnership with ACIAR, which dates back to the 1980s and initially focused on Giant Clams at Makogai Island. This foundational work has paved the way for sustainable aquaculture practices throughout Fiji.

Building upon these sustainable practices, the Ministry expanded its initiatives in 2009 to encompass projects such as the cultivation of freshwater prawns, illustrating a shared commitment to fostering fisheries development and sustainable livelihoods.

The Savusavu Mabe Pearl and Handicraft Showroom represents not just an economic opportunity but also a commitment to preserving traditional skills and empowering local artisans. This showroom will be a hub for economic activity and pride, as it offers unique handicrafts made from Mabe pearls, which contribute to sustainable income generation for local communities.

Moreover, the facility is set to host workshops aimed at training fisheries officers and community members in transforming raw materials into exquisite handicrafts. Minister Bainivalu emphasized that this initiative symbolizes a collective vision for community empowerment, environmental protection, and sustainable economic development.

By nurturing resilience and creating growth opportunities, this project assures a bright future for coastal communities, enabling them to prosper while preserving their rich cultural and natural heritage.

Overall, the opening of this showroom is a hopeful step forward, highlighting the commitment to community development, sustainability, and the protection of local traditions.
