As Fiji observes International Human Rights Day, the Pacific Sexual and Gender Diversity Network (PSGDN) is advocating for enhanced protection of dignity, safety, and equality for individuals of all sexual orientations and gender identities.
Loata Tucika, the Interim CEO of PSGDN, emphasized the persistent violence, harassment, and discrimination faced by LGBTQI+ individuals across the Pacific. She urged governments, faith groups, and community members to collaborate in fostering environments that are safer and more inclusive. “LGBTQI+ people in our region continue to face human rights challenges. It is vital that states and communities work together to create safe and inclusive environments for everyone,” she stated.
Furthermore, Tucika highlighted ongoing initiatives funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), in partnership with ILGA Oceania and DIVA for Equality. These efforts are designed to strengthen regional advocacy and promote protective legislation for LGBTQI+ rights.
The urgency of this call to action is underscored by rising incidents of targeted attacks in Fiji and other Pacific nations, often exacerbated by online hate and insufficient legal protections. Tucika stressed the responsibility of states to prevent violence, hold perpetrators accountable, and eliminate policies that unjustly criminalize individuals based on their identities or expressions.
“Upholding human rights strengthens families, communities, and societies,” she concluded, urging a renewed commitment to protection, inclusion, and cultural sensitivity throughout the region. The hope is that increased awareness and collaborative efforts can foster a more just society for all individuals, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
