Public Service Commission Chairman Luke Rokovada, alongside Permanent Secretary for Civil Service Parmesh Chand, is visiting Samoa this week to engage in important discussions and share valuable insights regarding public service. Their presence is aimed at fostering collaboration to address regional needs and devise cooperative solutions rooted in the expertise of the Pacific Islands.
Rokovada highlighted that this visit offers a unique platform for dialogue among over 80 leaders from various Public Service Commissions and Senior Government Officials representing 16 Pacific Island nations over the coming four days. During the opening of the conference, he emphasized that this meeting is a significant opportunity for leaders to strengthen relationships, tackle common challenges, and explore shared opportunities.
He stated, “As a subregion of Large Ocean Island States that compose our Blue Pacific Continent, we recognize the necessity of establishing strong and resilient public service systems to address future challenges and enhance the potential for our people.” The Commissioners Fono is designed to facilitate mutual learning by showcasing successful Pacific-driven solutions.
Rokovada also pointed to the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific, which articulates the vision of Pacific leaders for a resilient, safe, and inclusive continent. He mentioned that achieving this vision hinges on the enhancement of public services, making them more trustworthy to citizens, adaptable, results-driven, gender-inclusive, and focused on people’s needs.
The week ahead will encompass diverse panel discussions focusing on vital topics such as workforce sustainability, ethical practices, public service reforms, and building resilience through appropriate remuneration and rewards.
This initiative not only exemplifies a commitment to collaborating towards a brighter future for the Pacific Islands, but also showcases a forward-thinking approach to fortifying public services that can better serve and reflect the needs of the communities. As these leaders gather, there is hope for lasting partnerships and innovative solutions that can significantly uplift the public sector across the region.
