Dr. Transform Aqorau, Vice-Chancellor of the Solomon Islands National University, has sounded a warning regarding the escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, emphasizing that it could have significant repercussions for the Pacific region. He calls for Pacific Island nations to unite as an “Ocean of Peace” to navigate these uncertain times.

The current situation in the Middle East is alarming, with missiles being fired, civilian casualties rising, and vital oil routes such as the Strait of Hormuz facing closure. Dr. Aqorau assesses that the resulting disruption in oil supplies from the Gulf could lead to a spike in global fuel prices. For Pacific Island countries, heavily reliant on imported fuel, this could manifest in elevated electricity costs, pricier transportation, rising food costs, and an overall increased cost of living. He cautions that these factors could impose another severe external shock on already fragile economies.

“Ordinary people will bear the brunt of the costs of war, and the repercussions will not spare the Pacific,” Aqorau stated, highlighting the region’s ongoing struggles with climate change, youth unemployment, rising sea levels, and other pressing issues. He emphasized the urgent need for peace, especially as Pacific nations continue to navigate such multifaceted challenges.

Aqorau reinforced the Pacific’s dedication to remaining a peaceful region, noting that the commitment to being an “Ocean of Peace” is both a symbolic and strategic stance. This commitment includes unity, dialogue, and a rejection of militarization, aimed at protecting the region from the destructive legacies of global power conflicts.

As global tensions escalate, Dr. Aqorau urges regional solidarity and collaboration to ensure the Pacific remains resilient amid these challenges. By prioritizing peace, Pacific Island nations can work together to safeguard their futures and foster stability in the face of external pressures.
