A significant milestone was reached in Nabua, Suva, as students, teachers, and parents convened for the official ground-breaking ceremony of the Ratu Sukuna Memorial School sports and recreational ground, a project valued at $243,000. Great Council of Chiefs chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula officiated the event, highlighting its importance for the school and its future athletes.
Ratu Viliame described this moment as the beginning of a promising era for the school and its students. He noted that various athletes have previously represented Fiji at both local and international levels, expressing hope that many future stars will emerge from this newly developed facility. Over the past 16 years, the school experienced challenges due to a lack of maintenance, which coincided with broader national issues, including the disbandment of the Great Council of Chiefs and the suspension of Ratu Sukuna Day.
“This moment is about creating opportunities from our difficulties,” Ratu Viliame stated, describing the initiative as a symbol of renewal for the community. Alongside the ground-breaking ceremony, the event served as a commemoration of the late Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, whose legacy remains a guiding influence in both national leadership and educational growth.
Ratu Viliame emphasized that the vision behind the school’s restoration aligns with the aspirations of the Great Council of Chiefs, aiming to foster tradition while empowering future generations. He stressed the importance of honoring the leadership that has shaped Fiji, asserting that the school’s upgrades are set to benefit not only the current students but all future generations aiming for success in sports and recreation.
The sentiment reflects a broader commitment to revitalizing educational and recreational facilities in Fiji, resonating with earlier initiatives aimed at enhancing community spaces, such as the redevelopment of Ratu Sukuna Park. Such projects are instrumental in bolstering youth development and community well-being, offering a hopeful outlook for the youth of Fiji.
Overall, the establishment of the sports ground symbolizes not only a physical improvement in facilities but also an investment in nurturing talent and ambition among students—creating a foundation for thriving future generations guided by the values celebrated in Ratu Sukuna’s legacy.
