Former SODELPA general secretary Lenatasi Duru has joined forces with members of the G16 Opposition to consider creating a new political party. This decision follows his resignation from SODELPA in December 2022, a move prompted by the party’s coalition with The People’s Alliance and the National Federation Party (NFP) to form the current government. Duru has expressed serious concerns regarding the dynamics of the Coalition government, particularly criticizing the inclusion of former FijiFirst parliamentarians in key ministerial roles.

Highlighting the political troubles faced by the Coalition, Duru noted that the Prime Minister must navigate a precarious position as the government operates under constant threat. He commented, “Where the Prime Minister is coming from, he needs to secure his position, especially with Government constantly under threat.” Duru also reflected on the sacrifices made by SODELPA during coalition negotiations, questioning the effectiveness of the leadership’s current strategy and priorities.

Emphasizing the need for an alternative political vision, he stated, “We are trying to offer something different. Politics is a game where you play your cards and play them right.” Responding to concerns from the iTaukei community about unmet expectations under the FijiFirst government, Duru assured that the forthcoming manifesto and constitution of the new party would address these issues comprehensively. He highlighted the need for ensuring that resources from past governments are effectively utilized for the public good. “We just need to take time in making sure that those resources and financial gains from previous governments are utilized effectively,” he asserted.

Duru’s move reflects a broader trend within the G16, as other members, including Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu, are also announcing plans to create a new political party. This collective action signifies a pivotal moment in Fiji’s political landscape, which could potentially revive democratic engagement as the nation approaches the 2026 general elections.

Overall, Duru’s initiative brings forth an optimistic opportunity for revitalizing political discourse in Fiji. It aims to ensure citizens’ voices are addressed while enhancing the inclusivity of the political process, which is crucial in addressing the pressing needs of the populace. As the momentum builds ahead of the upcoming elections, this could signal a renewed commitment to participatory governance and responsiveness to the citizens of Fiji.
