In a remarkable development for the residents of Bilalevu, Sigatoka, a new cemetery crossing has been commissioned, providing a crucial solution to the community’s long-standing challenges. The initiative ensures that families can now access the Bilalevu Cemetery without the inherent dangers that previously accompanied such journeys, especially during flooding.
For years, residents from Navula, Loma, Bita, Bilalevu, Tuvuto, and surrounding settlements faced isolation during heavy rains when floodwaters submerged the paths, complicating the final farewell to loved ones. This new structure not only enhances accessibility but also restores dignity and safety during these poignant moments.
The project was realized through a shared financial effort, with the government contributing $11,564.50 while the Bilalevu Cemetery Committee raised the remaining funds. Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, emphasized the project’s significance, noting that it epitomizes the successful collaboration between communities and government. Singh applauded this bridge as a demonstration of the Community Grant initiative’s role in uplifting the everyday lives of Fijians.
Highlighting the project’s success, Singh stated, “This bridge ensures families can reach the cemetery with dignity, even in difficult weather. It responds to the very mission of my Ministry to strengthen harmony and mutual respect among Fiji’s communities.”
