New recruits at the Fiji Corrections Service have received important guidance from Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa as they near the end of their training. During a recent address to the group, he emphasized the necessity of maintaining professional boundaries when interacting with inmates.

Dr. Nakarawa noted that, although the recruits have successfully completed a rigorous 14-week Basic Recruit Training program, the real challenges begin as they transition from training environments to their professional roles. He warned that “familiarity breeds contempt” and stressed the vital importance of integrity in their responsibilities. “You have everything to lose,” he cautioned, reinforcing that they must hold steadfast to the principles they’ve learned.

The Commissioner extended his well wishes as the recruits prepare for their final weeks of training before graduation. He also spoke about the significance of continuous education and strong communication skills, which are essential for success in the corrections field.

This emphasis on professionalism parallels ongoing initiatives within the Fiji Corrections Service to improve rehabilitation practices and ensure the safety and integrity of both staff and inmates. Dr. Nakarawa’s proactive approach reflects a commitment not only to training new officers but also to creating a positive future for the corrections system in Fiji.

Amidst challenges, these initiatives showcase a hopeful vision for the future of corrections, reinforcing the importance of integrity and education for both officers and the communities they serve.
