Setareki Dawai of Natabua High School smashed the Intermediate Boys discus games record with a throw of 49.89 metres on Saturday, eclipsing the previous mark of 49.35m and claiming gold in the event. The record-breaking effort came on Dawai’s second attempt and gave him a clear margin at the top of the podium.
Dawai’s 49.89m throw improved on the old benchmark by 0.54 metres, resetting the standard for the age group. The new mark was enough to settle the contest well before the final rounds, with Dawai producing the biggest throw of the competition early in the series and then holding firm under pressure.
Ratu Kadavulevu School’s Asitamani Fuka took silver after a strong series of throws, his best measured at 47.85m. Vamarasi Kafoa completed the medals with bronze after posting a top effort of 43.83m. The placings reinforced a tight fight for podium positions, but Dawai’s second-round effort proved decisive.
The results underline Natabua High School’s continued presence in Fiji youth athletics and point to Dawai as one of the country’s leading young throwers. Breaking a games record in the Intermediate Boys category — typically the stepping stone to senior school and national competition — will increase attention on his development and future competitions.
Coaches and teammates at the meet applauded the performance, which also serves as a benchmark for rivals in upcoming school and regional competitions. With the season still unfolding, Dawai and his rivals have time to build on these performances ahead of national championships and selection windows later in the year.
Saturday’s event produced clear distances between the medalists, but also highlighted depth across the field as other competitors posted personal bests and season marks. For now, the headline is Dawai’s record 49.89m throw — a new target for intermediate boys discus competitors across the games.
