The Nasinu Town Council is implementing a significant initiative to tackle the escalating issue of illegal dumping in the area. In collaboration with the Nasinu Festival Charitable Trust Fund and Vodafone Fiji, the council will install 40 high-resolution CCTV cameras at known litter hotspots throughout the township. Special Administrator Salesh Kumar emphasized that despite existing ‘No Littering’ signage and regular waste collection, the problem persists, particularly with individuals from outside the district coming in to illegally discard their rubbish.

Kumar expressed concern over the severity of the situation, stating that it had reached a critical level. He noted, “We’ve provided bins, signage, and regular pickups, but some people still choose to discard their waste anywhere.” The first batch of cameras, funded through profits from the 2024 Nasinu Festival, aims to promote a cleaner and safer Nasinu. The initiative represents a strategic move towards utilizing technology for urban management, as Vodafone Fiji is assisting with the technical aspects of the project.

In his plea to residents, Kumar highlighted the need for a change in mindset and community pride, likening the behavior of residents abroad, who respect local cleanliness standards, to that which is needed back home. The surveillance system is expected to be operational by the end of July and is part of a broader effort to engage the community actively in maintaining a clean environment. Kumar encouraged residents to report illegal dumping incidents and participate in ongoing clean-up activities, remarking, “Let’s work together and make Nasinu a model town — one we can all be proud of.”

This initiative reflects a collective commitment to enhancing public health and environmental sustainability in the community. Previous efforts to address littering in Nasinu and similar advancements underscore a proactive approach towards fostering civic responsibility and engaging community members in the shared goal of environmental cleanliness. The collaboration with local organizations also points to a growing movement that connects community pride with proactive measures to ensure a cleaner, safer living environment for all. The optimism from both council officials and residents alike signifies a hopeful trajectory toward a more environmentally conscious and responsible future for Nasinu.
