A proposed retail and office development by Sun Town Property Development Pte Limited in Veivatuloa is under scrutiny, as Namosi villagers gathered for a public consultation regarding the project’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). This important meeting aimed to inform the villagers about potential impacts of the project and gather their feedback before any development decisions are finalized.

Tui Namosi Ratu Suliano Matanitobua and the villagers expressed strong support for this development, viewing it as a significant opportunity for economic growth in the Namosi province. The Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Sivendra Michael, emphasized that such consultations are a legal requirement under Section 34 of the Environment Management Act 2005. He highlighted the necessity for developers to present their EIA findings to ensure that all concerns and suggestions from the community are taken into account.

Dr. Michael assured the community that the Ministry will ensure that economic development is balanced with environmental protection. Any approval of the project will depend on its adherence to legal standards, mitigation of potential environmental impacts, and active community involvement throughout the process.

This move towards development comes amidst increased attention in the region regarding large projects and the associated impact on local communities. Previously, similar sentiments were echoed when residents in the region expressed concerns over a proposed hydro project, highlighting the community’s desire for thorough consultation and involvement in decision-making processes. Through these consultations, there emerges an opportunity for constructive dialogues that could forge paths towards sustainable development that respects both economic ambitions and environmental integrity.
