Prominent businessman Aiyaz Musa has been deemed eligible to run for the Vice President West position in the Fiji Football Association elections scheduled for tomorrow, pending the outcome of his pending appeal. Musa, who previously served as the Fiji FA vice president, resigned from his post in August 2023 following his conviction related to drug importation.

In an effort to regain his position, Musa appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland after the FFA Governance Committee dismissed his application to contest the vice-presidential position based on drug charges stemming from 2019. Musa had been involved in the import of pseudoephedrine into New Zealand, which led to a four-year prison sentence that he served.

Most recently, Musa submitted a Request for Provisional Measures to participate in the elections, and the CAS president granted him this request. This decision temporarily suspends the Governance Committee’s previous ruling, allowing him the opportunity to run until a final determination on his appeal has been made. However, if victorious in the elections, Musa’s assumption of office will also be paused until resolution of the ongoing arbitration.

Despite being initially excluded from the candidate list released by the Fiji FA, Musa’s legal battle illustrates the complexities surrounding governance in sports associations. His case reflects broader issues of accountability and representation within the Fiji Football Association, where fresh leadership is essential for progression in the sport.

The elections will provide a platform for numerous candidates, creating a hopeful anticipation for revitalized governance in Fijian football. As the community engages actively in this electoral process, it highlights a collective commitment to enhance the development of football in Fiji, paving the way for a more robust sporting future.
