The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) has taken significant action against Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) by issuing a Prohibition Notice following the confirmation of an oil discharge at the Sigatoka Pump Station. This decision resulted from reports by local residents in the surrounding villages of Vunavutu and Nasama, which led to immediate inspections by the Ministry.
These inspections revealed that the substance leaking was waste oil from EFL’s operations. To address the issue, the MECC has directed EFL to flush out and remove any residual lubricant oil that has contaminated the soil beyond their operational boundaries. This measure is essential to prevent further pollution of nearby waterways, which the local community heavily relies on for their daily activities.
EFL has also been ordered to cease all activities that contribute to the oil discharge until the situation is effectively managed. The Prohibition Notice will remain in place until the Ministry is assured that EFL has adequately contained the spill and established reliable measures to prevent future occurrences.
This incident has reignited concerns among local communities about environmental pollution linked to EFL, underscoring the critical role of public vigilance in reporting environmental hazards. Community members emphasize the importance of safeguarding their natural resources, as seen in past pollution issues.
The proactive response from the Ministry, coupled with robust community engagement, offers a glimmer of hope for a speedy resolution to the environmental concerns raised by this incident. The collective aspiration for a cleaner and safer environment underscores the necessity for ongoing collaboration between governmental agencies and local stakeholders to ensure environmental health and sustainability for both current and future generations.
