Businessman Charged in $57K Online Fraud Scheme

Major Fraud Bust: Businessman Charged with $57K Scam in Suva

A businessman named Raman Rajeshwar Prasad, 45, has been taken into custody after being charged with unlawfully acquiring over $57,000. He appeared before Suva Magistrate Pulekeria Low, facing 67 counts of obtaining financial advantage by deception, as well as a charge for possessing property suspected to be proceeds of crime. The alleged fraudulent activities occurred between January 7, 2020, and January 2023, during which Prasad is accused of deceiving a complainant by falsely claiming to sell land plots that he did not actually own, using BSP online banking and M-Paisa.

The investigation was carried out by the Criminal Investigations Department’s Major Fraud Unit, Anti-Money Laundering Unit, and Cyber Crime Task Force. This case highlights ongoing worries regarding online financial fraud, particularly the manipulation of buyers in the digital marketplace.

Recent cases echoing this trend include a 27-year-old from Moto, Ba, who faces similar charges connected to financial deception through social media. Such incidents underscore a disturbing increase in fraud in online transactions, prompting authorities to urge consumers to exercise heightened vigilance. Buyers are encouraged to thoroughly verify sellers to mitigate the risk of falling victim to scams.

The legal proceedings against Prasad and others accused illustrate a growing commitment among law enforcement to adapt to the changing landscape of financial crimes. This focused effort to hold fraudulent individuals accountable serves not only to protect consumers but potentially deters future offenders contemplating similar deceptions. As awareness and preventive measures grow, there is hope for a safer online transaction environment for all users.
