Fiji is set to spotlight its sporting excellence at the 2024 Fiji Sports Awards on March 22, hosted at the Vodafone Arena in Suva. With the theme “Celebrating Sporting Excellence,” this annual event aims to honor the remarkable achievements of athletes, coaches, and officials, inspiring future generations within Fiji’s sporting community.
Sponsorship for this year’s awards comes from FIJI Water, the Oceania National Olympic Committee, and Paradise Beverages. The evening will see nominees competing across 11 categories, including Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Young Athlete of the Year, and Team of the Year. Among the nominees is amateur boxer Merewalesi Kolitapa, who is nominated for the Young Female Athlete category, representing both AFL Fiji and the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association.
Notably, the awards this year have recorded an impressive 112 nominees from 22 national sporting organizations, a significant increase from last year’s 98 nominees. This growth underscores the commitment and enthusiasm present within Fiji’s sports community, fostering unity and collaboration among athletes, volunteers, and supporters alike. Peter Mazey, CEO of the Fiji Sports Commission, has highlighted the essential contributions of volunteers and officials in this initiative.
As Fiji’s athletes prepare for pivotal international competitions like the Paris Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games in 2024, the awards provide an excellent opportunity to celebrate collective achievements while generating excitement for the future of sports in Fiji. The recognition garnered through the Fiji Sports Awards not only honors individual accomplishments but also instills pride and hope, encouraging a vibrant sporting environment that inspires future generations to strive for excellence.
