The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced substantial disciplinary actions against drivers as part of its initiative to boost road safety. Between 2023 and 2024, over 5,000 license holders faced various punitive measures, including the suspension of 176 drivers. Assistant Minister for Transport Naisa Tuinaceva stressed the importance of these actions in promoting accountability and adhering to road regulations.
Tuinaceva pointed out that speeding and drunk driving continue to be significant contributors to traffic accidents. Notably, the number of serious traffic incidents rose from 243 in 2023 to 263 in 2024. To address this alarming trend, the government plans to implement increased fines as a deterrent against such violations and aims to reduce accidents by 50%.
As part of their enforcement strategy, the LTA is already utilizing portable speed cameras and plans to deploy 11 more over the next three months, costing approximately $0.8 million. In addition to the 14 static cameras and 31 rotating camera sites currently in use, these efforts are aimed at strengthening road safety enforcement across the region.
Interestingly, despite a rise in registered vehicles—from 148,000 in 2023 to 154,000 in 2024—there has been a notable enhancement in road safety outcomes. The number of traffic fatalities has significantly dropped, with only two deaths reported in the last two months compared to ten during the same timeframe the previous year, marking an impressive 80% improvement. This positive change is largely attributed to intensified enforcement efforts in conjunction with proactive education and awareness campaigns conducted by the LTA and the Fiji Police Force.
These initiatives form part of a comprehensive strategy to cultivate a safer driving culture in Fiji. Continued focus on education and strict enforcement of traffic regulations will be vital in sustaining this encouraging trend toward improved road safety.
Overall, the collaborative efforts of the government and LTA signal a positive future for reduced traffic incidents and enhanced safety for all road users, with ongoing initiatives expected to further elevate awareness and responsibility on the roads.
