Companies and individuals operating in the petroleum sector, particularly those in need of new or renewed Dangerous Goods (DG) Class 3 licenses, can now access training through a qualified and accredited private company endorsed by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). Michael’s Safety Training & Consultancy Services, established and led by internationally-certified DG Class 3 trainer and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) expert Michael Fong, is offering this essential training following the LTA’s endorsement in March 2023.
With over 25 years of hands-on experience in DG Class 3 driver training, Fong has been certified by Shell Australia to oversee various critical tasks such as the handling, storage, and transport of dangerous goods, confined space entry, work permit systems, fuel tanker gas-free processes, and marine oil spill investigation and response. Unique to Fiji and the Pacific, Fong’s training caters specifically to operators in the petroleum industry, focusing on private and corporate entities that transport flammable and combustible Class 3 products including benzene, diesel, kerosene, and Jet A1 fuel.
The training comprises three key components: a classroom session that addresses risk assessments, fire extinguisher usage, truck components and functions, driver behavior, and defensive driving; a practical session that involves understanding the features of petroleum tankers; and guidance on the various aspects of onsite discharge processes.
Fong emphasizes the importance of drivers comprehending their vehicles thoroughly, as the transport of Class 3 products involves significant risks, with many of these substances being highly flammable or combustible. His approach not only covers legal compliance but also stresses the necessity for drivers to maintain a healthy and vigilant mindset before getting behind the wheel.
Since the LTA’s endorsement, interest in the training has increased, particularly from companies in Labasa and Savusavu, despite an initially slow response. Fong has also engaged with the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF) and the Fiji Human Resources Institute (FHRI) to raise awareness about the training opportunities available.
Fong’s overarching message to all drivers, not just those needing DG Class 3 certification, is to embrace accountability and responsibility in their roles. He advocates for a proactive approach to vehicle maintenance, urging that fleets be kept up to date to ensure safety for drivers and the public alike. This dedicated focus on safety training underscores a commitment to both operational excellence and the well-being of drivers in the field.
