The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has revoked the driver’s licenses of eight individuals implicated in fatal traffic incidents, underscoring its commitment to road safety. Among those affected is a 21-year-old truck driver whose recent crash on Princes Road in Tacirua tragically resulted in the death of a 13-year-old student.

LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa announced that these individuals faced showcause proceedings based on Regulation 30 of the Land Transport (Driver) Regulations 2000. The truck driver’s license has been suspended for five years due to the grave nature of the accident, compounded by the fact that he was operating the vehicle with an expired Learner’s Permit.

Rokosawa emphasized that this disciplinary action serves as a stern reminder to all drivers about the repercussions of reckless driving. He asserted the importance of adhering to license conditions to safeguard the lives of everyone on the road. “The authority maintains a zero tolerance policy towards reckless driving and will act swiftly against individuals who jeopardize road safety,” he stated.

The tragic incident in Tacirua has intensified concerns about irresponsible driving, prompting Rokosawa to convey that safe driving is not only an individual challenge but a collective responsibility. He cautioned that a single moment of carelessness can lead to irremediable consequences.

In response to escalating traffic violations, the LTA is collaborating with the Fiji Police Force to implement stricter measures against repeat offenders and to overhaul current traffic regulations. Under Section 268 (a) of the Crimes Act 2009, driving recklessly is classified as a summary offence, facing penalties of up to two years in prison.

Rokosawa reiterated the need for continued scrutiny of drivers who show blatant disregard for safety, particularly those lacking valid licenses. The recent trend of rising road accidents, attributed to speeding and inattentiveness, has prompted urgent actions from the authority.

In summary, the LTA’s steadfast measures signify a crucial step towards enhancing road safety and reducing traffic fatalities. As drivers are reminded of the serious consequences of reckless behavior, it is hoped that these actions foster a culture of accountability and vigilance on the roads for the betterment of the community.
