Fiji National University’s Naiyaca Campus in Labasa is set to make history by hosting its inaugural graduation ceremony next week, even as significant construction efforts on the multimillion-dollar facility are still underway. This milestone is especially noteworthy as it will see Doctor of Philosophy candidate Ferial Ibrahim becoming the first-ever PhD graduate to receive her degree at this developing campus.
The Naiyaca project has faced various challenges since its inception in 2013, including legal and financial setbacks that halted construction in 2019. However, work has resumed, and Pinto Constructions is currently putting the finishing touches on a bure-style structure that will be the backdrop for the graduation ceremony.
University Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba has emphasized that this event signifies the campus’s progression towards becoming a key educational center in the Northern Division. Over the past months, efforts have included land clearance, tree planting, and a concerted push to ensure that Naiyaca embodies modern educational values. With classes set to start in 2027, the university’s commitment to enhancing educational opportunities in Labasa is becoming increasingly apparent.
This graduation ceremony not only marks a celebration of academic achievement but also represents a hopeful future for the Naiyaca Campus and its potential to serve as a beacon of education in the region.
