Labasa’s Burglary Spree: Trio Faces Court Over Shocking Crimes

A juvenile and two men are set to appear in Labasa’s Magistrates Court today facing numerous charges related to burglary and aggravated robbery. These individuals are allegedly connected to a string of house burglaries that occurred in Labasa between December 5 and December 31, 2024.

The incidents reportedly began on December 5, 2024, when the trio broke into the residence of a 43-year-old self-employed man in Bocalevu, who was away with his family. They stole goods valued at $1,104, which included 5kg of Yagona, various mats, and bags.

The following day, the group targeted the house of a 50-year-old farmer in Vuniqari, Tabia, while the family was attending a wedding. Items worth $18,894, including jewelry, clothing, mobile phones, and fragrances, were taken during this break-in.

On December 13, they again struck in Bocalevu, this time stealing shop items valued at $3,217 from a 43-year-old self-employed woman whose family was also away for a wedding.

In a particularly alarming incident on December 20, the suspects allegedly threatened a 60-year-old woman and her 2-year-old granddaughter with a cane knife, making off with possessions valued at $6,372.

The series of burglaries culminated on December 31, 2024, when they broke into the home of a 54-year-old farmer while the family was asleep, waking them as they removed louver blades from a room. The value of the stolen items in this instance amounted to $1,817.

This situation highlights the community’s ongoing battle with crime, prompting a discussion about safety and security measures that residents may need to adopt. As the judicial process unfolds, the involvement of law enforcement may encourage a renewed focus on crime prevention in the area, potentially leading to safer neighborhoods in the future.
