Waisea Makulau, President of the Labasa Vendors Association, has reported a noticeable decline in the annual supply of produce this year, a trend that affects a wide range of goods. He noted that as a result, customers are increasingly turning to alternatives such as rice and cassava. The situation is particularly concerning for dalo, as prices are anticipated to rise due to limited availability.
Makulau emphasized that dalo traditionally sees heightened demand during the festive season, but historical patterns indicate that supply struggles to keep pace with customer needs in Labasa. He cautioned that this year may follow a similar trajectory, potentially leading to shortages.
This ongoing issue underscores the importance of boosting agricultural activities in the Northern region to better meet future market demands. On a more positive note, community members can enjoy the seasonal availability of pineapples, which are currently abundant. However, consumers are encouraged to be diligent in comparing prices during the festive season to ensure they are getting the best deals.
