Kava’s European Breakthrough: Fiji Eyes Economic Boost

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has lauded a recent court ruling in Germany that may enable the commercialization of kava in Europe and other regions. He described the decision as advantageous for Fiji’s kava sector, presenting significant opportunities for both Fiji and the Pacific.

On June 18, 2024, a German court lifted a two-decade prohibition that had barred kava from being marketed as a pharmaceutical product. Although the decision is currently under appeal, there is optimism that kava could soon be legally available for sale in Germany.

Rabuka noted that this development would not only enhance kava exports but also provide support to the numerous Fijians reliant on kava cultivation.

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica echoed Rabuka’s sentiments, hailing the ruling as a pivotal move towards enhancing Fiji’s global presence and stimulating economic growth. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to assisting kava producers in capitalizing on this opportunity.

Kamikamica stated that the Government is diligently working to ensure Fiji meets international standards so that it can fully take advantage of new market openings as they arise. He encouraged continued support for the kava industry as the nation strives for a prosperous future.
