The Kadavu Development Plan 2025-2035 is a significant initiative designed to empower local villagers, according to Isikeli Vuniwaqa, the chairman of the provincial council. He emphasized that the plan outlines a clear roadmap to help the chiefs and the community of Kadavu achieve their aspirations.

Vuniwaqa highlighted that Kadavu has faced many obstacles due to its geographical features, which have resulted in a prolonged isolation. “It’s hilly, and primarily accessible by water,” he noted, pointing out that although recent improvements in infrastructure have been beneficial, there are still pressing issues primarily related to transportation to and from Suva, along with inadequate communication services.

The lack of communication infrastructure on the island has been a significant setback compared to other provinces, which has hampered the region’s development efforts. Vuniwaqa stressed that these problems need to be addressed if the island is to see proper progress.

The launch event, which took place at the Great Council of Chiefs’ center in Suva, marked two years of dedicated work involving wide-ranging consultations with various stakeholders, including provincial council members, government departments, and the iTaukei Affairs Board. Vuniwaqa expressed the importance of inclusivity in the planning process to ensure the voices of the Kadavu people were heard.

Akuila Masi, the chairman of the development committee, explained that the plan is structured around five key priority areas designed to enhance opportunities for the residents of Kadavu. This proactive approach aims to facilitate infrastructure development and improve the overall quality of life for islanders.

As Kadavu embarks on this new phase of development, the commitment shown in creating a comprehensive and inclusive plan holds promise for fostering sustainable growth and greater connectivity for its people. The community can look forward to progress that respects their needs and aspirations, creating a brighter future for Kadavu.
