The Managing Director of Houng Lee Kaba Jacob Limited, Sanjay Kaba, is currently facing allegations of obtaining a financial advantage and has submitted a bail variation request at the Suva Magistrates Court. Kaba, charged by the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC) earlier this month, has plans to travel overseas next month.
The Magistrate granted his bail variation for planned travel between March 7 and March 17, imposing a bail bond of $25,000 on Kaba and each of his two sureties. Additionally, as part of the bail conditions, Kaba’s mother is required to surrender her passport to the court.
Kaba’s intention to travel was further clarified by his defense counsel, noting that the designated travel dates were subject to adjustment based on the court’s response to his request. It has also been highlighted that Kaba aims to travel internationally in both April and May.
The allegations against Kaba date back to his tenure as a board member of Telecom Fiji Limited and Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited, from January 27, 2017, to January 20, 2019. It is alleged that he engaged in misconduct by submitting a tender through his company, Houng Lee Kaba Jacob Limited, for project management services related to TFL’s new office and data center project. FICAC asserts that Kaba unlawfully acquired over $766,327 between June 2022 and July 2023, despite knowing that his company was ineligible as he did not disclose his directorial connection.
This ongoing case underscores the vital importance of transparency and accountability in both public and corporate governance in Fiji. Authorities are continuing their push against corruption, which could ultimately lead to strengthened ethical standards in various sectors. The outcome of this trial will be closely monitored as it highlights essential issues regarding integrity within leadership roles in business and government.
