A 36-year-old security guard was found guilty of raping a 23-year-old female colleague during a massage session at his home in Lami. The High Court in Suva, under Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu, heard that the victim, who had previously faced sexual violence in her childhood, had gone to the accused for professional help due to ongoing back and stomach pain.
On November 1, 2023, during the massage, the man reportedly began to touch her inappropriately, eventually leading to an alleged assault where she attempted to resist but fainted. Despite the accused’s denial of the charges, insisting that the session remained professional, the court found sufficient evidence against him based on the victim’s testimony and corroborating statements from her boyfriend.
The accused is currently remanded in custody, and the court will reconvene on June 6 for sentencing. This case underscores the critical importance of supporting survivors of sexual violence and addressing the societal issues that facilitate such crimes.
Previously, similar cases have emphasized long-standing challenges related to sexual assault in the region. Justice Bulamainaivalu has consistently advocated for victims’ rights, ensuring that their voices are heard as part of the legal process. As this case develops, it remains crucial for the community to foster educational initiatives around consent and to strengthen support systems for those affected by sexual violence.
By raising awareness and ensuring that justice is served, there is hope that survivors will feel empowered to come forward and that systemic changes can create a safer environment for all.
