The judgment for Armugam Goundar, a 49-year-old carpenter charged with the alleged murder of his 78-year-old father, has been postponed. Originally set for today in Suva under Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull, the ruling will now be delivered on March 4.
The allegations stem from an incident in Manoca, Nausori, in 2022, where Goundar was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time. After the alleged offense, he took his father to the Nausori Health Center, where medical personnel observed visible injuries on the elderly man, prompting a report to the Health Ministry officials.
Representing Goundar is defense lawyer Jerry Dinati, while the state is represented by lawyer Moira Konrote from the Director of Public Prosecutions’ office. Goundar is currently out on bail as he awaits the new judgment date.
This case highlights the serious issues surrounding domestic violence and the repercussions of substance abuse. It serves as a reminder of the importance of community support for individuals and families in crisis. The adjournment, while unsettling for those involved, underscores the legal system’s commitment to ensuring thorough and fair proceedings.
Ultimately, the outcome of this case could lead to a broader dialogue about the social challenges contributing to such tragedies, fostering hope for improved support systems that address the underlying causes of violence in families.
