Hip-hop icon Jay-Z has strongly rejected serious allegations made in a recent lawsuit that he and Sean “Diddy” Combs sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl more than 20 years ago. The lawsuit, filed in October against Combs, has been updated to include Jay-Z as a defendant. It claims both entertainers assaulted the minor during a party following the MTV Video Music Awards in 2000.
In a statement from his entertainment company, Roc Nation, Jay-Z criticized the lawsuit’s attorney, Tony Buzbee, for the accusations. Jay-Z emphasized the severity of the claims, urging Buzbee to pursue criminal charges instead of civil ones, stating that anyone guilty of such a crime against a child should face serious consequences.
The statement dismissed the lawsuit as “idiotic,” asserting that the allegations, while serious, could be seen as laughable if they weren’t so disturbing. Jay-Z referenced his humble beginnings in Brooklyn and expressed a strong stance on protecting children, arguing that he does not engage in what he termed “games” involving false accusations.
Separately, Combs is facing legal challenges, having been indicted on charges including sex trafficking and racketeering, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
Buzbee, a Texas-based attorney known for filing lawsuits against Combs, has not responded to requests for comment. Additionally, Buzbee recently faced accusations himself, having been sued by an anonymous celebrity who claimed he threatened to fabricate sexual assault allegations unless that celebrity agreed to participate in a confidential mediation.
In response to Jay-Z’s denials, Buzbee took to social media, claiming that Jay-Z has previously attempted to mislead observers about his connection to the case and stating that rather than intimidation, Jay-Z’s actions have empowered the plaintiff.
