Japan’s government has issued a warning regarding the possibility of more strong earthquakes occurring in the waters southwest of its main islands. Authorities have advised the public to remain cautious but not to succumb to unfounded predictions of a major disaster following a recent surge in seismic activity.
Recently, the region experienced a 5.5-magnitude earthquake off the southernmost main island of Kyushu, prompting the evacuation of residents from nearby remote islands. The quake was part of a larger trend; over the past two weeks, Kagoshima prefecture has reported more than 1,000 tremors, which have sparked rumors fueled by a comic book’s prediction of a major disaster this month.
Ayataka Ebita, the director of the Japan Meteorological Agency’s earthquake and tsunami monitoring division, stated that accurately predicting the timing, location, and intensity of earthquakes is still beyond current scientific capabilities. He urged the public to base their understanding of these natural events on scientific evidence rather than speculation.
In particular, concerns have arisen among travelers due to these rumors, with data showing an 11% decline in arrivals from Hong Kong compared to the same month last year. Despite these fears, Japan has seen record tourism numbers this year, with April reporting 3.9 million visitors, indicating a resilient tourism sector.
Interestingly, the manga artist Ryo Tatsuki, creator of “The Future I Saw,” which has been linked to the disaster predictions, clarified that she did not intend her work to be prophetic.
With Japan being one of the most seismically active countries in the world—accounting for approximately 20% of global earthquakes with a magnitude of 6 or higher—being prepared for these natural occurrences is crucial.
