Delays in housing projects on iTaukei land have become a significant concern for landowners, according to statements from the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB). CEO Solomone Nata informed the Standing Committee that despite over 40 development leases being granted to the Ministry of Housing, only two projects have reached full completion to date.

This slow progress has led to frustration among landowners, many of whom are now in the second or third renewal cycles of their leases and are eager for clarity regarding the timeline for promised developments. The situation has intensified to the point where some landowners are contemplating not renewing their leases, especially in cases where their land is designated within reserve areas that revert to reserve status after the lease expires.

The TLTB emphasizes that lease renewals are contingent upon mutual agreement; however, the ongoing development delays remain a pressing issue for landowners. This highlights the dire need for effective communication and action between stakeholders to address these frustrations and ensure that housing developments can progress as planned. The prospects of future developments present an opportunity for the revitalization of local housing solutions, positively impacting the community once these projects are underway.
