The Ministry of Public Works has expressed its full support for the national budget for 2025-2026, emphasizing a strong focus on infrastructure and rural energy development. Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau announced that $800 million has been allocated for various infrastructure projects, with $8.8 million specifically designated for solar home systems and maintenance in rural areas. This funding aims to tackle longstanding energy challenges in remote communities.
Tuisawau highlighted the introduction of the Infrastructure Resource Owners Development Fund, which will ensure that landowners whose properties are utilized for infrastructure projects receive fair compensation and benefits. This initiative seeks to meet legal requirements regarding compensation related to water resources, forest use, and road development, while also improving access to energy.
In the context of previous related initiatives, Tuisawau has previously underscored the critical relationship between energy and water services, indicating that effective water delivery relies heavily on access to energy. This approach aligns with the Coalition Government’s broader strategy to enhance essential utilities for grassroots communities, emphasizing the importance of the water-energy nexus in climate financing discussions. The government continues to focus on inclusive growth and supporting rural communities by bridging development inequalities and enhancing rural infrastructure.
The overall perspective from the government indicates a promising future for rural and remote areas, with investments that not only target energy access but also address infrastructure needs, ultimately aiming to improve the quality of life for many Fijians.
