A family of 12 is now homeless following the demolition of their two houses in Kalabu by landowners. A video circulating on social media depicted the scene, with men dismantling the wooden structures while two police officers were present to manage the situation.
Ilisapeci Mate, 51, has resided on the property for over 50 years. She explained that the eviction was prompted by the discovery of two dried marijuana branches in their home last month. “After that, the landowners sent us a notice saying we had to dismantle our house because of the drugs found,” she said. Initially required to remove just one house, the landowners later demanded that both be taken down, leading to last Friday’s demolition.
Now lacking a permanent residence, Ms. Mate and her family are temporarily staying with relatives. “I’m uncertain of what to do now because we’ve stayed here for years. I’m pleading with the relevant authorities to please see my situation and assist me and my family,” she shared.
The Fiji Police Force confirmed their involvement at the eviction scene, stating that their role was to “ensure peace was maintained.” Inquiries regarding the legality of the eviction and the drug-related claims have been directed to the police, who have not yet commented on these matters.
This incident highlights broader issues surrounding property rights and the legal complexities in housing disputes. Similar cases have arisen recently, such as that of Sofia Farzana in Lautoka, who faced a forced eviction and accusations from her landlord about land sales and unjust financial demands regarding her family’s residence.
As these issues evolve, there is hope that authorities will take action to rectify inequalities in property rights and enhance housing security. Ensuring fairness in these disputes is critical to providing stability for families like Ms. Mate’s and Ms. Farzana’s, who are navigating the challenging landscape of potential homelessness due to legal and social hurdles. This situation calls for urgent attention and compassionate responses from officials to prevent further distress for affected families.
