Heartbroken Father Demands Action in Son’s 3-Year Disappearance

It has been over three years since seven-year-old Chiraag Murthi disappeared from his home in Qila on Taveuni Island, Vanua Levu, a case that continues to weigh heavily on his family. Chiraag, who faced challenges with hearing and speech, went missing on November 12, 2021. His father, Shyam Murthi, is calling for action from the Fiji Police Force and expresses frustration over the lack of updates and communication regarding the case.

Mr. Murthi often visits the Taveuni Police Station seeking information but reports that officers are unresponsive and at times rude. He has suggested that police personnel could benefit from training in anger management and customer service to improve their interactions with the community they serve. He believes the island’s remote location may lead to a sense of detachment among officers, influencing their attitudes toward the residents.

With concerns about the vulnerabilities of Taveuni Island to criminal activities such as human trafficking and kidnapping, Mr. Murthi insists that the investigation should not be labeled as a “cold case.” He emphasizes the need for the police to be more proactive in addressing these issues, particularly because there are multiple export businesses operating around the island.

Despite facing the prospect of another Christmas without his son, Mr. Murthi remains determined to find Chiraag, fueled by the hope that his son is still alive. Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, has reaffirmed that the investigation remains open and ongoing, offering a glimmer of hope for the Murthi family.

The case of Chiraag Murthi highlights the emotional toll that prolonged uncertainty can have on families dealing with the disappearance of loved ones. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of community policing and transparency in building trust between law enforcement and the public. As the search continues, Mr. Murthi’s resilience and commitment to seeking answers stands as a testament to a father’s love and hope.

In summary, the ongoing search for Chiraag Murthi emphasizes the need for improved communication and support from local law enforcement, especially for families enduring such painful circumstances. With continued efforts and collaboration, there remains hope for resolution and healing.
