The International Pride Orchestra recently performed at the Strathmore Music Center in Maryland, featuring a program that included works by renowned American composers such as Aaron Copland and George Gershwin. This concert aimed to celebrate WorldPride, an international festival dedicated to advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, which is currently taking place in Washington.
Initially hoping to perform at the Kennedy Center, the orchestra faced challenges due to President Donald Trump’s public declaration against drag shows and what he deemed “anti-American propaganda.” Following this, the Kennedy Center communicated that they could not advance a contract with the orchestra, despite longstanding negotiations.
As a result of this setback, the orchestra found a supportive venue at the Strathmore, where they entertained an enthusiastic audience featuring 1,166 attendees. The evening highlighted themes of equality, patriotism, and artistic expression, with performances ranging from a dazzling rendition of “Rhapsody in Blue” by transgender pianist Sara Davis Buechner to an uplifting performance of “America the Beautiful” by the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington.
Michael Roest, the conductor and founder of the International Pride Orchestra, emphasized the importance of creating a safe space for individuals to live and love authentically. This sentiment resonated strongly within the context of the concert, especially given the backdrop of executive orders under the Trump administration that have sought to limit the rights of transgender individuals and restrict anti-discrimination policies.
The concert concluded on a hopeful note with attendees waving U.S. and rainbow flags, showcasing solidarity and a commitment to advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, even in the face of adversity. Jennifer Curtis, concertmaster of the orchestra, expressed pride in the visibility and awareness that the orchestra’s situation has generated, reinforcing the community’s resilience.
This event was not only a celebration of musical artistry but also a testament to the power of the LGBTQ+ community and its ongoing fight for acceptance and equality, offering a positive and inspiring moment within a challenging political landscape.
