Grounds of Hope: Nasinu Rugby Union Faces Team Decline Amidst Facility Challenges

The Ram Sami Nasinu Rugby Union is currently facing a reduction in competing teams this year, experiencing a drop from 12 teams in 2024 to just 10 teams in their ongoing weekly competition. Akuila Rokobuli, the union’s assistant treasurer, addressed this decrease while overseeing the fourth round of competition at St Marcellin Primary School in Vatuwaqa.

Rokobuli attributed this decline primarily to a lack of available grounds for play, an issue that has also affected other rugby unions. “The number of teams have dropped because of the unavailability of grounds. This is the biggest challenge we are facing likewise for other unions,” he stated. The union previously conducted games at the USP grounds but had to shift due to upgrades, leading to a temporary return to St Marcellin before the Milo Kaji competition begins.

In light of the challenges, the Nasinu Rugby Union envisions securing its own permanent ground—a necessity highlighted by their growth from having 22 teams when originally established in 2016. The club had to relocate from FNU in Valelevu due to development work on their former grounds. This common challenge among provincial rugby unions emphasizes the need for better facilities and resources to support local rugby development.

The situation mirrors those faced by other teams in the region, such as the Nasinu Reds. While they struggle with limited training schedules due to work commitments, they remain determined to achieve a successful outcome in their respective championships.

There is hope amidst these challenges. The persistent efforts of community members and the collective ambition to boost rugby competition in the region suggest that solutions may soon be within reach. Through unwavering dedication, rugby unions like Ram Sami Nasinu continue to inspire resilience and teamwork in their communities.
