Fiji Navy Leads Multinational Search for Nine Missing Seafarers Off Kadavu

Search and rescue teams continued operations on Thursday for nine personnel reported missing at sea off Kadavu, with the Republic of Fiji Navy and international partners stepping up assets after the group failed to return from waters around the island over the past few days. The Rescue Coordination Centre Fiji (RCC Fiji) is coordinating the multi-agency effort, working closely with the Fiji Police Force and other supporting agencies.

In a statement, the Fiji Navy confirmed that RFNS Timo departed this morning for the designated search area to strengthen ongoing surface search efforts. The operation has also been bolstered by the Royal New Zealand Air Force, which deployed aircraft to assist aerial searches. Authorities say the last known position of the missing group is believed to be near Solo Lighthouse, north of Kadavu, and search activity has been concentrated in that vicinity.

Over the past several days local communities, hotel operators — including Kokomo Island — and private air service providers have played a key role supporting the response. “Their support has been invaluable and reflects the importance of collective effort during maritime emergencies,” the Navy statement said, thanking community members and operators who have relayed sightings and assisted with logistics and observation.

Officials urged members of the public to remain alert and report any sightings, floating debris, or unusual activity at sea that might be linked to the missing personnel. Villagers and coastal communities in Kadavu, Beqa, the Coral Coast and surrounding areas were asked to pass information through their Turaga ni Koro, the nearest police station or other relevant authorities so search teams can quickly act on leads. The statement added: “The Fiji Navy, through RCC Fiji, will continue to work closely with the Fiji Police Force and all supporting partners as search efforts continue.”

The incident comes amid growing public concern over maritime safety and the handling of missing-person cases in Fiji. In recent months authorities and civil society groups have pressed for better-coordinated national responses to disappearances, including calls for a dedicated taskforce to improve rapid responses and community engagement. Past sea tragedies have also prompted calls for tighter safety measures and clearer search protocols.

RCC Fiji said families of the missing are being kept informed and offered support, and that every effort is being made to locate the nine people. Authorities reiterated that further updates will be released as more information becomes available and urged anyone with information to contact local police or RCC Fiji immediately.
