The Vesida Grassroot’s Volleyball tournament took place on Saturday at the LICI Multipurpose Courts in Suva, attracting 20 men’s teams and showcasing a renewed interest in volleyball within the community. This event, the second of its kind following last year’s inaugural tournament, was highly praised by Maika Kini, President of the Vesida community, who noted the impressive turnout and the introduction of an under-18 category for the first time.
With three clubs participating in the girls’ division, the tournament’s expansion reflects the community’s dedication to engaging youth through positive activities. Kini highlighted the importance of sports as a countermeasure to the rising concern of drug use among the youth, particularly those aged 16 to 18. He emphasized that the tournament serves as a platform to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs and promote healthier alternatives.
The participation of 11 clubs signifies a collective effort to create a supportive environment for young athletes, allowing them to focus on their development and well-being. The remarkable turnout at the tournament also demonstrates the enthusiasm of youth in volleyball, as many participants momentarily set aside distractions to compete and showcase their skills.
Most notably, the tournament was successfully organized without any sponsorship, showcasing the community’s commitment to providing opportunities for local players to hone their craft. Kini expressed heartfelt gratitude to all participating teams and the Vesida community for their robust support.
This event aligns with wider efforts in Fiji to promote sports as a means of community engagement and personal development, addressing social issues and steering youth toward a more positive future.
As the popularity of such grassroots initiatives continues to grow, they become vital tools in fostering unity, physical fitness, and resilience amongst the youth. The ongoing commitment to sporting events like the Vesida Grassroot’s Volleyball tournament illuminates a hopeful avenue for structuring community programs that inspire and uplift the next generation.
