Players from the Grasshoppers Netball Club recently participated in a meaningful mangrove planting event, emphasizing their commitment to community and environmental stewardship. The initiative took place last Saturday, during the club’s competitive activities within the Suva Netball Association, where young players planted 100 mangrove seeds.

According to club secretary Unaisi Ranavue, the planting of mangroves is vital not only for ecological reasons but also serves as an important lesson for the players. “Mangroves are not just trees. They protect our coastal ecosystems, prevent erosion, support marine life, and act as natural barriers against climate change,” she remarked. This activity reflects the club’s overarching goal of empowering young athletes to become responsible caretakers of their environment.

This mangrove planting was the club’s second community outreach effort; their first was a successful rubbish pick-up drive near Muanikau Park and Stella Maris Primary School. Club founder and head coach Alumeci Sachs expressed the importance of such engagements in nurturing responsible individuals. “Our aim is to keep our girls engaged, educated, and empowered. Netball is the medium, but the mission is to build better citizens,” she emphasized.

The club’s community outreach extends further as they plan to visit the Dilkusha Home to uplift the spirits of its young residents. Through these initiatives, the Grasshoppers Netball Club is not only focusing on athlete development but also fostering values of compassion, service, and a sense of community, nurturing future leaders along the way.

This initiative aligns with similar community efforts across Fiji focused on environmental conservation and sustainability. Such activities are crucial in inspiring the youth to engage with and take responsibility for the health of their local ecosystems, instilling a sense of hope for a more sustainable future.

Overall, the Grasshoppers Netball Club’s efforts highlight the positive role sports organizations can play in enhancing community values and environmental awareness among young people.
