The Ministry of Sugar Industry has allocated over $43,000 in grants under its ongoing New Farmer Assistance and Lease Premium Renewal programs, aimed at supporting new and struggling growers within the sector. This significant financial assistance was highlighted by Charan Jeath Singh during one of his final official engagements as Minister for Sugar Industry.
Mr. Singh emphasized the government’s commitment to revitalizing sugar communities, stating, “This Government has made it clear. We are not in the business of shutting down sugar communities but we are the business of rebuilding them.” He noted that the assistance provided through these programs is pivotal, contributing to a national investment of $2.7 million that has benefitted 587 farmers. He announced that this latest grant of $43,479 is part of an ongoing effort, as an additional 16 farmers in Labasa are set to receive grants totaling $78,473 later this week.
Highlighting the importance of these grants, Mr. Singh explained that they serve as more than just financial support; they represent a crucial investment in the sector. “They help new farmers enter the sector, support lease renewals, and ensure that productive land remains under cultivation,” he remarked.
As Mr. Singh prepares to transition away from his direct responsibilities in the sugar industry while continuing his role as Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and taking on the Public Enterprises portfolio, he expressed mixed emotions. “I am sad to depart but I leave knowing that we have laid a strong foundation for the industry’s turnaround. The systems are improving, relationships are stronger, farmer confidence is returning, and the direction is clear,” he stated, reassuring stakeholders that his support for the sugar industry will endure beyond his tenure.
This ongoing financial support underscores the government’s dedication to strengthening the agricultural sector and ensuring a prosperous future for sugar farming in the region. The commitment to revitalization and improvement reflects a positive outlook for the industry moving forward.
