Graham Arnold Set to Revitalize Iraq’s World Cup Hopes

Former Australia national team coach Graham Arnold is set to take on the role of Iraq’s new football manager, with an official announcement expected this weekend. This change comes ahead of Iraq’s crucial World Cup qualifiers against South Korea and Jordan next month, according to a senior official from the Iraqi Football Association (IFA).

Ahmed Al-Mousawi, an IFA official involved in contract negotiations, stated that Arnold’s contract is nearing its finalization. “Graham’s contract details are almost finalized and will be announced officially upon his arrival,” Al-Mousawi explained. Arnold will be supported by a strong technical team comprising seven coaches, including a highly regarded assistant with experience in the English Premier League.

Arnold’s previous tenure saw him lead the Socceroos to the round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup, where they faced an intense match against Argentina. However, he resigned following a challenging start to the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, before being succeeded by Arnold in a bid to improve Iraq’s fortunes.

Iraq currently ranks third in Asian Group B, trailing the top two teams that automatically qualify for the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The team is looking to bounce back after a 2-1 defeat to Palestine, and Al-Mousawi noted that Arnold will soon meet the players to configure a training camp in Basra in preparation for the upcoming matches.

Historically, Iraq has only qualified for one World Cup, in 1986, where they were eliminated in the group stage after losing all three games. However, this appointment carries a sense of hope, as the nation seeks to revitalize its football ambitions and forge a path towards success in upcoming qualifying matches.

The situation highlights the broader context of accountability and stability for national teams in Asia as they navigate the rigorous World Cup qualifying process. Fans are optimistic about Arnold’s experience and strategic oversight, anticipating a positive transformation in Iraq’s football trajectory.
