Government cannot stop settlers’movements

Government’s Challenge: Can Informal Settlements Be Managed?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has acknowledged the challenges faced by the government in preventing individuals from relocating to informal settlements in Fiji. He emphasized that while the government may not halt this movement, it can promote formal rental housing as a better alternative.

Rabuka explained that informal settlements arise out of necessity, indicating that people often have no other choice but to live in such areas due to economic constraints. He highlighted the importance of encouraging these residents to consider formal accommodations that provide essential infrastructure, such as fire hydrants and other critical utilities, which are often lacking in informal settlements.

The Prime Minister also pointed out that the National Fire Authority has a duty to deliver services across all demographics, including those living in both formal and informal settlements. He reiterated the need for the Authority to be vigilant in addressing fire safety concerns, as a lack of infrastructure in informal areas can hinder their response capabilities.

This discussion underscores the ongoing challenges in addressing housing needs and safety in Fiji, illustrating a commitment to improve living conditions while acknowledging the complex realities faced by many citizens. It reflects a holistic approach towards urban development where the government is seen as an enabler rather than a barrier to better living situations.
