Former Fiji Airways Fiji 7s head coach Ben Gollings is making a return to the rugby scene, this time spearheading a Chennai Bulls Select team at the upcoming Coral Coast Sevens. Gollings views the tournament as an essential platform for developing incoming talents, particularly in the vibrant rugby landscape of Fiji.
In his remarks, Gollings expressed his excitement about returning to Fiji and leading the Chennai Bulls. He clarified that this squad is a select team focused on development rather than the mainstream squad that usually competes in the Rugby Premier League (RPL). “This is a great opportunity to use the tournament to build our rugby program,” he said.
The Chennai Bulls Select squad is a mix of four players from the Indian national team, chosen local talents, and Australian-based Peni Naqua, who recently joined from the Western Force. Gollings anticipates that participating in the tournament will provide invaluable experience for both the Indian players and local athletes.
“This tournament offers a unique chance for the Indian national team players and local talents to gain exposure at an elite level,” Gollings explained. He firmly believes that there’s no better place than Fiji to cultivate and enhance the skills of sevens players.
While competitiveness is important, Gollings emphasized that the primary focus is on player development rather than just winning. The Coral Coast Sevens will commence this Thursday at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, and fans can watch the action live on FBC Sports.
This initiative not only nurtures emerging talents but also reinforces the rugby community in Fiji, showcasing the nation’s commitment to developing the sport.
