As Fiji marks 146 years since the arrival of the first indentured laborers from India, 87-year-old Raman Lal Vallabh from Labasa shared insights into his family’s Girmit heritage. Vallabh’s grandfather came to Fiji in 1917 through the indentured labor system, and while he never had the chance to meet him, the lasting influence of the Girmitiyas has been crucial in shaping his life and professional journey.
In 1968, Vallabh established a photography business in Labasa with limited resources, driven by the courage inherited from his ancestors rather than wealth. He reflects, “We didn’t inherit wealth, but we inherited courage, and that was enough to start something of our own.” Over the years, his business has flourished, contributing positively to the town’s development and gaining community trust.
The upcoming Girmit Day celebrations, set to take place in Labasa from May 10th to 12th, will embrace the theme “Preserving the Past and Envisioning the Future.” This theme not only acknowledges the sacrifices of the Girmitiyas but also fosters hope for a unified community to move forward. Similar sentiments were echoed by other descendants of Girmitiyas, such as Ram Bahadur Singh and Shiu Kumari, who have shared their own family stories of struggle and resilience as Fiji prepares for the commemorative events.
Vallabh’s story, alongside those of others, underscores the importance of cultural remembrance and the value in preserving the legacies of the Girmityas. Such collective narratives serve as reminders of both the hardships faced by earlier generations and the strength that continues to foster community ties today. The Girmit Day events offer a platform for reflection, cultural celebration, and hope for future generations, showcasing the enduring spirit and contributions of Fiji’s diverse heritage.
The emphasis on honoring the past while focusing on community unity creates a hopeful outlook for the future of Fiji, as individuals from various backgrounds come together to appreciate their shared history and strengthen their connections.
