Tomasi Raiula, a dedicated 41-year-old rice farmer from Vunivutu in Labasa, has transformed his life through agriculture, proving that hard work can lead to financial stability and personal growth. Growing up in less favorable conditions, he faced challenges in education but was determined to change his circumstances. Three years ago, he decided to lease 35 acres of land to cultivate rice, a decision he describes as a “game changer.”

Following his exploration of various crops such as dalo, yaqona, and watermelon, he ultimately found success in rice farming, thanks to assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, which provided him with Boldgrain rice seeds. Raiula notes that the process of planting rice is relatively straightforward, allowing him to enjoy quick harvests every four months, which he sells to Fiji Rice Limited in Dreketi.

His success has enabled him to invest in a tractor and a personal vehicle, significantly improving his farming operations. Raiula expresses gratitude for his choice to pursue rice farming, which has allowed him to support his family and save for their future. He emphasizes the importance of farming, advocating that young people reconsider agricultural pursuits as a viable means of generating income and building a future.

Raiula is particularly concerned about rising crime rates and social issues involving the youth in urban areas, encouraging them to engage with the land. He believes that agricultural work can foster personal development, offering skills, discipline, and economic opportunities while keeping young people productively occupied.

His inspiring story echoes similar sentiments expressed by emerging farmers like Petero Maciu from Cakaudrove, who at only 21 years old, has also found success in agriculture. Maciu encourages youth to utilize unused land for creating sustainable livelihoods, reinforcing that dedication to farming can address issues like poverty.

Together, these stories highlight a growing awareness among Fijians regarding the potential of agriculture for economic development and community resilience. As more individuals like Raiula and Maciu embrace farming, there is hope for overcoming challenges and fostering a stronger, more self-sufficient society.
