Lote’s Homestay, located in Namulomulo, Nabouwalu, Bua, has emerged as a popular destination, effectively attracting a significant number of visitors during the festive season. The owner, Alipate Radrodro, who previously worked in the hotel industry, reported that over 100 guests stayed at the homestay last December alone, including personnel from various government agencies and NGOs.

The establishment of the homestay followed the devastating impact of Tropical Cyclone Yasa in 2020. Its first guests were staff members from Save the Children Fiji, who required accommodation while conducting post-cyclone assessments in the area. Mr. Radrodro shared that Save the Children Fiji stayed at the homestay for three months.

At just 38 years old, Mr. Radrodro utilized his past experience as a Business Development Manager at Holiday Inn Suva to transform his family home into a viable business, now offering 17 guest accommodations across three units. The pricing is set at $100 per person per night, which includes breakfast and dinner.

Mr. Radrodro credits his family, particularly his wife, for their unwavering support throughout his entrepreneurial journey. The homestay has received commendations for being the sole accommodation in Nabouwalu, strategically situated near the Nabouwalu Jetty. The homestay has also attracted ferry passengers looking for a place to rest during delays.

In 2023, Mr. Radrodro expanded his entrepreneurial ventures by launching a vehicle rental business, which currently boasts a fleet of 13 vehicles, including a minibus that operates along the Nabouwalu-Labasa corridor. He attributes the success of his homestay to the foundation for this new venture.

Looking ahead, Mr. Radrodro has ambitious plans for expansion, intending to enhance the homestay by adding a swimming pool, bar, and restaurant. The projected construction, estimated to cost around $1 million, is set to generate employment for 15 individuals. Additionally, he has secured a lease for beachfront land from the Mataqali (landowners) to provide guests with either a homestay experience or a boutique beachfront hotel offering.

With a strong sense of optimism, Mr. Radrodro is dedicated to furthering his vision for growth and innovation in Nabouwalu.

This article underscores the resilience and determination of local entrepreneurs who, through innovation and hard work, can create opportunities for themselves and their communities. It represents a hopeful narrative of recovery and growth, particularly following the hardships caused by natural disasters. Mr. Radrodro’s story inspires others by demonstrating how to adapt and thrive in the face of challenges.
