Eroni Qiolevu’s journey from a humble start as an engine room greaser to becoming a chief engineer highlights the remarkable potential for achievement through hard work and determination. At the age of 89, Qiolevu reflects on his extensive maritime career, which began shortly after he graduated from Ratu Kadavulevu School in 1953.

Qiolevu’s early career commenced with Carpenters Shipping, where he worked for a year before joining the Government ship, Degei. During his youth, he was committed to learning as much as possible since formal maritime education was limited at the time. His perseverance paid off when he joined an overseas cargo vessel, gaining invaluable experience that would shape his future.

Over the years, Qiolevu took every opportunity to learn and grow. He faced numerous challenges, including navigating language barriers and a lack of formal qualifications. However, with hard work, he eventually earned his credentials, studying in Norway and Portugal, where he graduated as a second engineer.

His upward trajectory was marked by resilience and integrity. As one of the few Fijians working in international waters, he embraced the responsibility of representing his country on a global stage. Throughout his 30-year tenure with Wilhelmsen, a reputable maritime company, and later on offshore oil rigs, he maintained his dedication to his work and commitment to his family back home.

Qiolevu emphasizes the importance of supporting family while working at sea and urges young seafarers to work honestly and responsibly. His successful career allowed him to provide for his family and build a home in Kaba Village while inspiring the next generation of Fijians to achieve similar milestones.

Now, as he enjoys retirement with his family, Qiolevu’s story serves as an inspiring testament to the power of commitment, integrity, and hard work in overcoming obstacles. It encourages young people, especially those in the maritime industry, to pursue their dreams with diligence and honor their roots along the way.
