Florence Ann Lalama Parr, a 22-year-old from Karoko Village in Tunuloa, Cakaudrove, has recently graduated from the University of the South Pacific with a Diploma in Library and Information Science (DLIS). This achievement marks an important milestone in her academic journey and reflects her dedication to learning and personal growth.
Growing up as the eldest of two siblings, Florence felt a strong sense of responsibility towards her family, which significantly influenced her character development. She recalls moments from her childhood filled with laughter and life lessons imparted by her parents. Notably, her experience at Suva Grammar School played a critical role in shaping her, offering not just academic challenges but also a network of lifelong friendships.
Florence initially envisioned a career as a flight attendant, but her academic path took her through different disciplines, including land management, social work, and psychology, before she discovered her true passion for library science. Inspired by her mother’s successful career in a university library, Florence made the pivotal decision to pursue a diploma in library studies. Despite the challenges she faced, including finding her footing in various subjects, she found her true call in library studies and successfully transitioned to this program.
Currently, she works part-time as a junior library assistant at the USP library, a role that allows her to balance her employment with her studies. Florence makes the most of her time in class, often using it to complete assignments and quizzes, ensuring that she can effectively focus on her academic priorities afterward.
Graduating alongside her sister Miriama made the experience even more special for Florence, as family support played a crucial role in her educational journey. In the coming years, she aims to pursue a degree in library science and hopes to eventually obtain her master’s degree. Her vision for the future involves becoming a flourishing librarian, curating collections and fostering a welcoming environment for patrons.
Florence also emphasizes the broader role of librarianship, stating, “It’s not just about books! It’s about knowledge, connection, and the countless opportunities to help others discover, learn, and grow.”
Her journey mirrors the inspiring stories of other graduates like Kitti-Talei Darlene Drodrolagi, who also overcame obstacles to achieve her educational goals. Both women exemplify resilience and dedication in the pursuit of higher education, illustrating that the journey, while sometimes challenging, can lead to fulfilling career paths and positive community impact.
Florence’s story serves as a motivation for many young students, highlighting that with determination, support, and adaptability, they too can achieve their dreams.
