Isireli Bobo, a former winger for the Flying Fijians, reflects on his rugby journey rooted in faith and determination. Guided by the words of Proverbs 16:3, Bobo’s path began on a school field in Ra and culminated in a memorable debut for Fiji against Tonga in 2003, where he scored a crucial match-winning try.

Bobo first gained national attention during the Japan Sevens in 1998, under the coaching of Rupeni Ravono. He was discovered playing for his village team, Mataravua, at the Bones Phillip Nawanqavesi 7s. The experience of wearing the white jersey was a dream come true. “I will always remember that first game in Tonga,” he said, expressing the emotional weight of stepping onto the international stage.

His rugby career has taken him globally, showcasing his talent at numerous tournaments, including the Rugby World Cup Sevens, and playing professionally in countries like France and England. Bobo fondly recalls the pride of playing alongside legendary player Waisale Serevi, which remains one of the defining moments of his career.

Now, as a coach for the Fiji Sports Council rugby team, Bobo is dedicated to passing on the spirit of rugby to younger generations. He emphasizes the importance of hard work and faith, encouraging his players to believe that they can achieve great things in the sport.

Bobo’s commitment to developing young talent in Fiji contributes significantly to the sport’s growth in the region. His insights align with other former players, who similarly embrace mentoring roles, fostering a promising future for Fijian rugby.

The current landscape of rugby in Fiji is vibrant, as demonstrated by Bobo’s observations of school competitions. He expressed pride in the rising standards and the increasing participation of schools from various regions, highlighting the untapped talent pool in the country. The emphasis on nurturing young athletes bodes well for the continued development of rugby in Fiji.

Bobo’s story exemplifies how faith, resilience, and a supportive community can pave the path to success, embodying the spirit of hope and potential that continues to motivate aspiring players in Fiji.
