The Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants (FICA) has successfully hosted two workshops on Evidence-Based Thinking (EBT), led by the esteemed Professor Keith Houghton. Known for his innovative educational contributions, Professor Houghton returned to Fiji for this workshop series, following the positive reception of his previous session last year.

The workshops took place on June 18 at the Holiday Inn in Suva and on June 24 at the Nalagi Hotel in Nadi. They focused on enhancing participants’ critical decision-making skills. According to FICA, Professor Houghton emphasized the significance of evaluating evidence, underscoring that not all evidence holds equal weight. He stressed the need for ensuring that evidence is both comprehensible and applicable in real-world decision-making scenarios.

Tarlochan Singh, FICA’s Professional Development chair, opened the Suva session, encouraging attendees to actively engage with the material presented. The workshops included case studies designed to foster a deeper understanding of the concepts discussed, promoting critical thinking and practical application.

Participants learned to recognize and evaluate useful information, navigate common biases, and translate their learning into actionable strategies in both personal and professional environments. FICA highlighted that such initiatives reflect their commitment to continuous learning and supporting their members in navigating complex challenges with confidence.

Through such educational endeavors, FICA aims not only to enhance individual decision-making capabilities but also to foster a broader culture of evidence-based thinking within the accounting profession and beyond.

The success of these workshops serves as a hopeful sign of progress in professional development, equipping individuals with crucial skills vital for today’s challenging environments.
